It wasBpointed out that the SIG needed a "kitty" for working capital inCpaying for meeting rooms, photocopying, etc. The members dection (also called a "patch") to AppleWorks that@enables all commands to be run from the keyboard. It supportsBseveral different 80 column cards (Videx, Viewmax, etc.) for theII+ and the Franklin.: It seems almost too good to be true; I chich gives you 10K of Desktop space, and<PLUS-WORKS- XM which supports several different RAM (extra@memory) cards to give you 72K of Desktop space. Both versionsBrun on the II+ and the Franklin. The ad claims that the programAmakes a modificalution, I was surprised the other day?to see an advertisement for a program called PLUS-WORKS, from@Norwich Data Services in East Norwich, NY. I haven't seen theAsoftware in action, but it is supposed to come in two versions,;PLUS-WORKS v1.0 wut unless you need the 160 column displayCfor some other applications (spreadsheets are a natural), you are;probably better off putting the money towards a //e. The3MultiView is available locally for about $200.00.A As for the software so& closed apples, Delete, etc.), youBmust have game paddles hooked up and make some ad- justments for5different keypresses to make the commands function.A To be sure, it is quite impressive, considering the problemsCthat must be overcome, bppleWorks, and it is NOT the;smooth, streamlined program I'm used to seeing on my //e.> First of all, the Desktop is lim- ited to about 10K ofCspace. Also, since the II+ lacks many of the keys on the //e andB//c (up & down arrows, open View 80/160 card from<Checkmate Technology here in the Valley. A feature of the@MultiView is that, when installed on an Apple II+, it allows aCmodified version of AppleWorks to be run. While I don't own one,@I have seen a MultiView running A piece of hardware.=Until recently, only the hard- ware solution was available.= A popular add-on for the Apple is a card that allows the?display of up to 160 columns on a monitor screen. One of the?more versatile units around is the Multihere is a>will, there is a way. Many people have become "two-computer@families" or have an Apple at work that is a different vintageBthan the one at home. The solution seems to boil down to eitherBa software patch or the addition of a specialoBcapitalize on features found only on the keyboards of the //e orB//c. Thus, I am convinced that AppleWorks must be run on one of>these machines in order to fully realize the convenience and>user-friendliness of the program. However, where t & the II+ and Franklin#---------------------------------> Now for some fun stuff. Several people have asked me ifBAppleWorks can be run on an Apple II+ or a Franklin. The answer=is a qualified "yes". Obviously, AppleWorks was written to late to advise people of the next meeting. As we=start to plan more into the future, we will be able to give@better notice. Interested parties are advised to log onto the:Apple Tree for up-to-date messages, or phone me at home.#AppleWorksng was tentatively=set for Wednesday, July 31, at 6:30 pm at the same location(Yucca Library).C Because of deadlines for article submission, this column willC"hit the streets" more than a month after this first meeting, and@probably toidedCon a periodic assessment of $5.00 per family. While not entirelyBcompulsory, members are encouraged to make their contribution so@they can enjoy the fruits of the association. A sum of $35.00Awas collected at this meeting. The next meetian't see howCAppleWorks can be patched so drastically and still work properly.BHowever, the software seems very reasonable at $19.95 for "v1.0"Band $49.95 for "-XM". Our group will try to obtain the software?for testing, and provide a more complete report. Norwich Data>Services may be contacted at P. O. The solution is to use [A]+S periodically to preventthe loss of data.B The beauty of [A]+S is that you don't have to go through td for you to spoil a "masterpiece" by@quitting the program without saving your opus magnus. The exit=routine checks to see if any changes were made to a file in:memory, and then insists that you save it before leaving<AppleWorks. This is nice,or editing any type of file.>This is the SAVE command, and it can be used at any point inBediting or entry of a file. All?right, it isn't much, but it is interesting to see the little#apple character where it belongs.Command of the Month Club-------------------------= Yes, once again As I said, AppleWorks works quite well with the enhancement.AThis would seem obvious, since AppleWorks runs fine on the //c,Bbut you never know. As far as I can see, the only difference is?that the open-apple character appears in place of the iters thatCexisted in the old character set (the flashing capitals). When aBprogram would normally display a flashing capital letter, it nowBdisplays an open- or closed-apple or any number of other arrows, lines, running figure(?), etc.B with software that was written to get around the 80 column dis-=play problems (some programs just refuse to run!), and withBconflicts with the Mousetext character set. Mousetext, you see,Bis a series of figures that replaced some of the characower power consumption, elimination of some problems@with the 80 column display, and last, but not least, MousetextCcharacters. You might add the compatibility with //c software asBa ben- efit, if that is important to you. The main problems areAthose not familiar with the new Enhancement, it:is new revision of the Apple //e computer which makes itBcompatible with the //c. It consists of a 65C02 microprocessor,Ba new character generator ROM, and two new PROM's. The benefits?include lnd theCEnhancement Kit update for older //e's, much has been made of its>incompatibility with some software. AppleWorks users will be?pleased to learn that the Kit will be an asset, rather than aproblem with AppleWorks.C Briefly, for IG(c) 1985, The Arizona Desert Apple Menagerie, Inc., Phoenix, Arizona. Have you ever seen a word processingAdocument that could crash your word processing software? We will dig out the answersto all questions.; First, I have received about six inquiries about the>AppleWorks Special Interest Group (SIG) so far. I KNOW ff to a rousing start, the material>could get scarce. My idea for this series is for it to be aCdiscussion of ways for using AppleWorks more effectively, as well@as a means for users to pose questions about the software. To?this end, I invitezation.-Reprinted from The ADAM'S APPLE, July, 1985 --Ron LaMeeAPPLEWORKS POWER? This article is the beginning of a series of articles on>AppleWorks. I hesitate to call it a column, because, if theAAppleWorks SIG doesn't get oately, I had no other9data on the Desktop, so I could shut down and reboot. I=discovered that I could get rid of the offensive patches by=positioning the cursor to the right of the strange patch of@garbage and using the "Delete" key to dispose of it; I imagine7that [A]+D (open apple+D) would have deleted it, too.A The problem? I suspect that the garbage consisted of some<control characters that the editor found "uneatable". We hope?our SIG will attract folks on all levels, with many different@uses for AppleWorks. We wiI suspect that the great popularity and wide distribution of?AppleWorks will encourage most Apple users to gain at least a/working knowledge of AppleWorks. 'Nuff said.A Review Update---------------C Last month's ADAM'S APPLE printeith power. Most pre-AppleWorks users will continue>to use their old familiar applications for "quick and dirty"Bjobs, but will begin to depend on AppleWorks in situations whereCthe integration and "Desktop" features are useful. In any event,>d use. Of some concern is theAproblems that have been reported with a few of the more popular printers.? On the balance, you have a package of features that make=AppleWorks ideal for most homes and small offices, offeringAsimplicity wr has a few strange idiosyn->crasies (but that could be said of most systems). The spread=sheet is decent, but it is unwieldy and somewhat limited in=capabilities. The brightest spot is the database, which isBextraordinarily simple to learn antive side, it is quiteBeasy to bomb the program (just try Reset or encounter some stray@control characters in a bit of text), and there is no built-in>mail merge capability. The individual applications get mixed>reviews, too. The word processoallowingBthe user to easily move back and forth between files. These twoAfeatures alone would sell a lot of packages, but there is more:Ait is all menu-driven, plus, it has great help screens, just inBcase you have a memory lapse. On the negares.AIt has some real good points: it is a integrated package, whichAenables the user to exchange information among word processing,:spread sheet and database files; also, it makes use of a@"Desktop" that holds several files in memory at once, the most user-friendly piece of goodsAto appear for the Apple. New users find AppleWorks pleasant toBlearn, while experienced people find it has real power to handledemanding jobs.A For me, AppleWorks is a mixed bag of good and bad featuuence for setting tab stops.: As new software became available, we began to see an>evolution towards that "dream" software. AppleWorks, in itsCpresent form, is an excellent example of how far the industry hasAprogressed, and is surely rt@way through my second round of problems, I dreamed of softwareBthat would warn me when I was about to destroy a 12 page letter,Cwould survive input of a stray control character, and would offerBa gentle reminder when I forgot the command seqlable in the deep, dark past, prior to the "birth" of Apple-BWorks. In the old days (the late '70's), working with state-of-<the-art software was a real adventure; it was easy to makeBmistakes, and the mistakes were sometimes pretty permanent. Also, don't forget to check the AppleWorX board on the APPLE TREE.*A Love-Hate Relationship with AppleWorks*----------------------d a review that I wrote about<the MultiRam card from Checkmate Technology. On of my few@criticisms was that the AppleWorks software patch didn't allow@for saving very large files (that is, larger than 135K) over aAseries of disks, and that the database was limited to just 1350?records. I am pleased to report that a beta test copy that IChave tested has removed these limitations. Also, Mr. Stephenson,?Checkmate's lead programmer, has installed few more bells and?whistles. It does work in the spreadBsheet and database applications, too. I understand that this can be OMdone with the vast memory of the MacIntosh, but we just have to be satisfied PNwith what we've got between AppleWorks and the IIe. Further, since more than PN2/3 of my time was consumed in the p spelling LJ'wrods', instead of 'words'. And so, I rarely write a lettre now without 9chekcing the spelling befoer sneding it to the printer.NL I have no doubt that time can be saved if the Spelling program could be NLintegrated with the Wors well worth it. I consider NLmyself a pretty good speller, and when I visually review a document, I find PNvery little wrong. You then boot Sensible Speller, and follow the menu LJinstructions to check the spelling in your document, which now presumably erstandable, and complete with screen displays for each PNprocedure. It took very little time to get used to the program, and when the OMProDOS version came along, the only major difference was in the manipulation 3of pathnames in place of the normible Software. To date, I have KIseveral lists made (vendors, parents, and so forth). It is very easy to FDcheck or modify a list before using Megaworks. Having the speIinterest. Although I have not tried Habamerge, I have experimented with IGthe Appleworks Mailing Program before Megaworks. AMP was impossible. A?Megaworks was much better. In defense of Megaworks' "quirk" of KIidentifying the merged informationo send the font to the printer. Once this is accomplished, GEyou use Open-Apple Control Reset with the Appleworks startup disk to /begin. I have found several limitations. ECI read Ina Levinson's review of Habamerge and Megaworks with great K fed to the IGprinter (mine is an imagewriter). You must create a custom printer (I IGcall mine Am Typewriter) in Appleworks. This customized program takes KIabout fifteen seconds to load (your printer must be on) and then another KIten seconds tar letter quality as can be expected. HFAfter reading the manuel and selecting whatever fonts you wish, it is LJeasy to customize a disk (which removes the hello and printer interfaces) KIand choose a font which can then be set as the standard to bePBI stating that packaging problems had slowed up the release. JHIn March, Audrey Anderson asked about the Vilberg Bros DMP Utilities. I LJhave been using their font American Typewriter for some time now and feel JHit certainly comes as close to ne pad, and software IGalarm clock. I use Appleworks all day and the ability to suspend this IGprogram for other projects was attractive. Two months ago have passed LJand I am still waiting for "Jeeves" to arrive. I did received a postcard Ffrom h in PBI was restored with the revision and I LJordered "Jeeves" when it was first advertised in A+. For those who might KIhave missed the ad, "Jeeves" is modeled after "Sidekick" and contains an HFappointment calendar, phonedialer, calculator, memoesponded to them. But remember, this program is not designed for big KIbusiness. Yet, a picture is worth a thousand words and someone with the Mtime can put together very attractive and useful graphs using Graphworks. I was FDgreatly disappointed when my copy of this program last winter. The GEdocumentation was poor and the effort required to produce a graph of JHlittle value made the whole experience distasteful. I have the feeling JHthat PBI Software wa me the AWUG disks promptly. The absence of Habamerge's JHmailing label capability in Megaworks is a real minus. On the whole, I KIsuspect that both programs have their supporters.
